Teacher Thoughts

Can you believe two weeks of school are over?  We've been spending our time making, learning, and practicing our class rules and procedures.  There sure is a lot to learn at the beginning of the year!  We have also been talking about the different choices we make every day and how much better our day goes if we make the right choices.
We will begin to learn about the different centers in our classroom this week.  It will take a week or so to get it all figured out, but when we do, we'll begin to have lots of fun learning about our great big, beautiful world!  You'll be getting a call soon, if you signed on as a classroom volunteer.  I like to have a parent help out with centers every day.  Thanks ahead of time for all your help in making this a wonderful second grade experience for your child!  Together we
CAN make a difference!
                    Sincerely,
             Martha Carlin

News from the Subject Areas

Mathematics - We began Math Compacting this past week.  Our first unit of study is Number Sense and Numeration.  We will spend several weeks exploring how numbers work, how to build bigger numbers, compare those numbers, and solve word puzzles about numbers.  There will be lots of hands-on learning with partners and small groups.
Spelling - Our first spelling unit we will be learning about the following spelling concepts:
1. Short vowel sounds are usually spelled with one vowel.
2. New words can be made by adding suffixes.
3. New words can be made by putting two or more words together and replacing a letter or letters with an apostrophe.
4. When h follows c, s, t, or w, the combination stands for a new sound.
It is important to practice the new concepts we are learning in spelling at school.  Therefore, your child will have spelling homework most Monday and/or Wednesday nights.

Reading - Each child should be reading at least 2 hours at home each week.  This can be time spent reading together, you reading to your child, your child reading aloud to you, or your child reading silently to himself.  For every hour of at-home reading, your child will receive a leaf to put on our class tree.  Thank you for helping me get this home reading program started so early!  The kids are doing a great job.  They have already added many leaves to our tree.  Be sure to check it out the next time you are in the classroom.
Science - We are beginning to learn about our environment this week and will continue to explore ways to protect it throughout the school year.  You should begin to hear talk about Reduce, Reuse, Recycle from your child.  Ask her how you can help at home.

Classroom Supplies

There seems to be a bit of confusion about the second grade supply list so I thought I would include it in this edition of my newsletter.  Go over it with your child to see what supplies he is missing.  Also, for some reason Fiskar's scissors wasn't on the list and every child needs a pair.  Sorry for any inconvenience!  Please send any missing supplies to school as soon as possible.

Homework Folders

Please remember to check your child's Homework Sheet  every night for the following:

1. Record and initial your child's reading nightly.  I will not record the reading if a parent has not initialed it.
2. Remove all papers that have been graded.  Sometimes your child will have drawn a smiley on his paper.  This means it has been checked.
3. Help your child check to see if all his homework is completed and ready to come back to school.
4. Check your child's circle every day.  This is a good way for us to keep in touch about your child's behavior.  For children who frequently change their card, implement a system of rewards at home to encourage good behavior.  Contact me for ideas, if you are having trouble coming up with a plan.
5. Read the back of the Homework Sheet for daily Reflection entries.  There should be an entry at least 3 times a week.
6. Read and discuss the week's Character Words and the Quote of the Week.
7. Help your child make sure he has packed all the things he needs for the next day of school.  This includes a clean bottle of water with a
POP-TOP to help avoid spills and a healthy snack.  Remember, the kids need to be happy, with a satisfied tummy and well hydrated in order to learn well.

Thank You!
Thank You!

Thank you to Kimberly  McMichael for all the work she has already done, and will do, as Room Mom.  You're the best!
Thanks to Nedia Hicks for the air purifier she has donated to our classroom.  Hopefully, it will help us all stay healthy this year.
